The New Mexico Black Caucus will convene the 1st Black Caucus Summit on Saturday, February 22, 2020 featuring special guests Karen Bass, the Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressman Ben Ray Lujan. The Events for the day are as follows:
Registration begins at 11:00 am and continues throughout the day
Lunch is served from 12 – 1:00pm
1. Census 2020 1:00 – 1:45 pm
Panelists: Louis Head, Nichole Rogers and Teresa Neely
2. Influence 2:00 – 3:00 pm
Panelists: Daniel Ivey Soto, a ranking member of the New Mexico Senate, Brian Colon, the New Mexico State Auditor and Alexandria Taylor, the Executive Director of the Sexual Assault Coalition talking about how to get more involved in influencing good policies for our communities through the legislative process. This panel will show the breadth of legislators, state governmental agencies and advocates in developing good policies for all New Mexicans.
3. Vote 3:15 – 4:15 pm
Panelists: Rep Deb Haaland and Maggie Toulouse Oliver, NM Secretary of State. Panelists will discuss how to protect our votes and to make sure that every vote counts.
4. Represent 4:30-5:30
Panelists: House Majority Leader Representative Sheryl Williams Stapleton, Former Treasurer James Lewis and Marcus Porter, Vice Chair, Democratic Party New Mexico The fourth plenary session is focused on representing. We are focusing on getting more community members to run for office.
The event for the evening is a reception featuring Congresswoman Karen Bass, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressman Ben Ray Lujan. The reception will focus on the theme of unity and party leadership.
Congresswoman Bass will talk about a message of strong leadership. She will be inspiring, and deliver a “message” of excitement around the work of Democrats.
Congressman Ben Ray Lujan will talk about his vision for the Senate and his role as a member of the United States Senate. Then, we will open the floor for questions.

A joint reception will be held celebrating Congresswoman Karen Bass and Congressman Ben Ray Lujan from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the New Mexico State Bar Office.
